FMG CEO Devadas Krishnadas was invited to be part of a panel discussion on “Nurturing Talent – The Importance of Sponsorship & Mentorship: Who, How, When and Where” at the Asian Women in Leadership Summit 2017, held at the Fullerton Hotel in Singapore on 17th May, 2017.
The panel also included Ms. Tan Su Shan, Managing Director of DBS, Mr. Michael Mingee, Senior Director for Compliance at Visa, Mr. Charles Brewer, CEO of DHL eCommerce and Ms. Jessica Tan, Member of Singapore Parliament, and was moderated by Ms. Rana Karadsheh-Haddad, Country Manager at IFC.
The panel discussion got off to a lively start with each panelist highlighting the importance of diversity in all aspects of society. There was a strong consensus among the panel that existing leaders play a key role in being deliberate when it comes to promoting diversity, be it in the corporate, public or civic sphere.
Members of the audience sparked off a passionate discussion on the role of quotas in promoting female representation and leadership. Devadas noted that a sole focus on numbers misses the key point: women should not have to make a forced choice between their careers and their realisation of womanhood, regardless of what this may signify for them at a personal level. In addition to the individual efforts of companies, the state needs to come in at the policy level. Importantly, societal expectations and mindsets have to be updated to reduce the asymmetry that currently exists between the genders when it comes to making trade-offs between professional and personal choices.
